Cupping therapy, commonly referred to as “cupping,” is an ancient, holistic practice with roots in early Chinese and Egyptian medical techniques. For thousands of years, people have turned to cupping to ease neck pain, back pain, headaches, and other ailments.
Cupping involves placing cups on the skin to create suction and promote healing through improved blood flow. This, in turn, helps relieve muscle tension, stimulate cell repair, and form new connective tissue.
This makes cupping an effective solution for those looking to relax, get relief from their symptoms, or heal from certain injuries. Proponents of cupping also claim this therapy helps balance energies within the body and builds up resistance to certain pathogens.

The process of cupping is simple. One of our licensed practitioners will place cups on your back, arms, legs, stomach, or other parts of your body. These cups are typically made of glass or plastic, but they may also be made of bamboo, metal, silicone, or ceramic. Here at One Agora Integrative Health Clinic, we use glass or plastic cups.
Before placing the cups on your skin, one of our specialists will heat the inside of the cups using alcohol, herbs, or paper. This heat source is removed before placing the cup on your skin.
Once placed, the heat from inside the cup sends out oxygen which creates a suction that holds the cup in place. This vacuum force also pulls your skin, connective tissue, and muscle upwards. Due to this change in pressure, your skin might turn red and tiny blood vessels may break, leaving bruises. This is normal and typically only lasts a week or two.
Cupping triggers a healing and detoxification response within your body, causing:
The cups can also be applied to acupressure points, which helps stimulate healing for digestive or skin issues.
What makes cupping the go-to option for many is that it treats a variety of ailments. While most turn to cupping for muscle tension relief or relaxation, cupping may also help alleviate symptoms of:
Cupping is also an effective way to help athletes speed up their recovery time from an injury.
While cupping offers powerful benefits, it’s not for everyone. We don’t recommend cupping therapy for:
We also strongly suggest waiting to schedule your cupping session if you have a sunburn, wound, or skin ulcer.
At One Agora, we offer cupping as a standalone therapy or paired with other services, like acupuncture. We also offer the option of adding CBD oil to your cupping session.
Before your appointment, we’ll meet with you to discuss your health history, goals, and concerns. We’ll share recommendations on how to prepare for your session and what to do afterwards.
Depending on your treatment, you may have multiple cups placed on your body. During your session, we may also gently glide the cups across your skin to help release muscular tension.
Because the cups’ suction force breaks open tiny capillaries under your skin, we may also apply ointment to your skin to prevent infection or discomfort. Afterwards, you may notice round bruise-like marks where the cups were placed. These are temporary and often fade within a week or two.
The cost for one cupping session is $50 for 30 minutes. You can add on CBD oil or another service at an additional charge.
Cupping is a safe, effective treatment for many health conditions, especially muscle or soft tissue pain. If you’re interested in trying a cupping session, we invite you to contact our office.
