      What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is an aesthetic procedure utilizing a chemical solution to remove the top layers of your skin and reveal the fresh layers beneath. Also known as dermapeeling, the chemical solution applied to your skin causes injury or trauma to skin layers. The layers eventually peel off revealing new skin. That new skin is typically smoother, brighter with more color and fewer lines and wrinkles.

What conditions can be treated with a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are used to treat specific skin conditions or to enhance your general appearance by improving the tone and texture of the skin on your face, neck or hands. Chemical Peels are most commonly used to address the following conditions:

      • Certain types of active acne as well as acne scarring
      • Wrinkling caused by hereditary factors, sun damage or aging
      • Dead skin cells
      • Liver spots
      • Hyperpigmentation
      • Age spots
      • Freckling
      • Uneven skin tone
      • Mild scarring
      • Scaly patches
      • Sun damage
      • Rough skin
      • Redness
      • Actinic keratosis (precancerous scaly spots)
      • Dull skin
      • Aging skin
      • Inflammation
      • Congested pores
      • Enlarged pores
      • Fine lines under your eyes or around your mouth
      • Dark patches (melasma) caused by birth control pills or pregnancy

Chemical Peels can be beneficial for all skin types – some Chemical Peels are appropriate even for rosacea and sensitive skin.

What are the benefits of Chemical Peels?

There are so many benefits to Chemical Peels – and the results get even better over time. Chemical Peels have been in use for decades and have a proven safety record for all skin types. From tightening lax skin and minimizing pores to diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, Chemical Peels can do all that and more – and do it affordably, effectively and safely.

By uncovering new layers of fresh, dewy skin, Chemical peels create a more healthy, radiant look, even out skin texture, and encourage faster cell turnover – even removing peach fuzz.

Chemical Peels also can be used in conjunction with other treatments.

What types of Chemical Peels are available at One Agora Integrative Health?

At One Agora Integrative Health, we offer the following Chemical Peel options:

      • Enlighten Peel
      • BioRePeel

Ask your aesthetician for options and specific recommendations for your skin concerns or goals.

      Are Chemical Peels Safe?

Chemical Peel treatments are generally considered safe for all skin types and skin tones. All but the most sensitive skin can easily tolerate a Chemical Peels treatment.

There are certain skin issues that prevent you from being an ideal candidate for Chemical Peels. Some people with darker skin run the risk of hyperpigmentation. Chemical peeling may also not be recommended if you have extra coloring in your scars, have a history of abnormal scarring, or have conditions or take medications that make your skin more sensitive.

It’s particularly important to stay out of the sun during the healing period after a Chemical Peel, so if you have reasons you cannot stay out of the sun, Chemical Peels are not advised.

What Can You Expect From Your Chemical Peel Session?

Your One Agora Integrative Health specialist will work with you to determine if Chemical Peels are a good fit for you – and which one might be best for your skin type and condition. If necessary, we may perform a skin evaluation and sensitivity test and customize the treatment for your unique skin needs or conditions.

You will work with your aesthetician to determine the depth of your Chemical Peel – a decision that can vary depending upon the condition of your skin and your goals. Optimal results are typically achieved with a series of treatments and a healthy daily skin care routine, utilizing products designed for use with chemical peels is recommended.

Your aesthetician will provide instructions prior to your Chemical Peel – like avoiding tanning or other requirements. Your Chemical Peels will be conducted in our office. The length of each session will likely depend on the condition being addressed, but normally run 30 minutes to an hour – longer if it’s your first session and involves a medical history and other new patient requirements.

During a chemical peel, your skin will be cleansed, and the selected chemical solution will be applied to your skin. You may experience a sensation of mild warmth or intense heat for the first few minutes. It may be followed by a stinging sensation. A cool compress may be applied to your skin to ease the stinging. The chemical applied to your skin will then be washed off and/or neutralized.

You should not experience any severe pain, side effects or downtime from mild Chemical Peels. The deeper the peel, generally, the more downtime is involved. Your One Agora Integrative Health specialist will discuss any aftercare you might need.

Mild chemical peels can produce a sunburn-type reaction including redness followed by scaling. You should apply recommended topical products until your skin heals. This should last from 3-7 days. Apply sunscreen daily after that. If your skin tolerates it, you should be able to wear makeup after treatment.

Additional Chemical Peels should be repeated every 2-5 weeks until you reach your goals – and normally, it will take 3-5 sessions to do so.

      When Will I See Results?

Most clients report visible skin improvement after the healing period following Chemical Peels - and an even, radiant skin tone after just one session. Chemical Peels can provide impressive results, but they are designed to be ongoing treatments for skin transformation and to reach your skin improvement goals.
